I’m sure that like me you are shell-shocked with the US Presidential election results. It seems inconceivable that a man with such extreme and unpleasant views could be elected President.
I dread to think about what this means for the US.
Backed up with majorities in the Senate and the House of Representatives, Donald Trump has the power to carry out his pledges. He has promised to build a wall between the USA and Mexico, has threatened to expel millions of people, and wants to overturn Wade vs Roe, the court ruling that legalised abortion. He has also demanded that Muslims be banned from entering the US and he will appoint the next Supreme Court judge which will tip the balance of the court for years to come.
But Trump’s victory will also have a profound impact in Europe. His victory will further empower and strengthen the far right and anti-immigrant politics here and abroad. Marine Le Pen will feel that she could win the French Presidency next May.
These are deeply troubling times. No wonder people are drawing parallels to the 1930s.
The work of HOPE not hate has never been more needed. At the same time we need to ensure that we are capable and ready to meet these growing threats, moves which could threaten the very foundations of society. We are currently working on shaping the future direction and priorities of HOPE not hate, and would love to share our thoughts with you when we complete.
In the meantime, we need to redouble our efforts here. HOPE not hate is calling a weekend of action on 3rd and 4th December to spread our message in local communities.
Please help us spread a message of hope
Britain is experiencing a rise in racism and the far right feels confident and bullish. It is vital that we start providing people with an alternative message. There will be activities across the UK, with different leaflets and messages produced for different areas.
Help out in your local area
We are living in dark and difficult times but it is precisely at moments like this that we need to redouble our efforts and get organised.
