We have just been watching a programme on the myths of the glorious revolution of 1688. It was one of those cases where the myths of the Victorian age was born. It was an invasion and not an invitation yet in the post truth times I reflect on how we miss the point that essentially a European army imposed a constitutional settlement on England a point that might not have been picked up by Farage, Johnson and Give. When the army landed near Torbay amongst its first ranks were 200 turbaned soldiers from the Dutch Empire .I could imagine UKIP screaming about illegal Moslem warriors stalking the streets of Brixham harbour .Then I heard of the myth of the Glorious revolution that was to be fashioned over the next 300 years. Little mention of the Glenco Massacre and the establishment of the Protestant Ascendancy in Ireland , the foundations of the British slave trade a d the lies of Whig History. Then I heard the events of 1988 in the house if Commons praised by Margaret Thatcher and echoed by a luckspittle Neil Kinnock. There was no mention of the 300 years of trouble, the foundation of the problems of a divided Ireland .Then Tony Benn stood up and pointed out how unrepresentative that changes as.He pointed out that the real changes had occured in the civil War some fifty year before and that the class who supported this 'glorious revolution's had shot, arrested and imprisoned the Diggers and the Levellers who had wanted a mass democracy. They never mentioned the establishment of the slave trade, the Glencoe massacre.the establishment of the Protestant ascendancy in Ireland and the toxic origin of the Troubles. They never told you that every major event in English History from 1066 tithe Magna Carts and 1688 had a European cause. They never tell you if the lies of Whig History and was it not for a few individuals we would swallow these myths. Please don't get fooled again .......
