What do we now know ? We know that UkIP has been stopped in its tracks. We know that aright wing agenda over health and social policies cannot be trumped by xenophobia and it's quite clear that the Liberal Democrats are back. Do I trust them hell NO But they have a role .UKIP will now pull itself apart and the long march of the realignment of the left moves on but it may take a Gramscian moment to burst into flower ....Is this the turn of the tide ? I hope so

would be easy to simplistically miss the point of last night's by
elections. Already the analysis talks of the disaster of Copeland.
However this fails to understand it's simply a tactical defeat for
the left. Strategically the defeat of UKIP in Stoke has more and
lasting significance. Thus was a more existential victory and shows
three things. First that Ukip could not put together a professional
electoral machine to maximise on Stokes 70℅ leave result, two that
you cannot campaign simply on xenophobic policies to detach large
sections of the working class to a right wing agenda. Finally it
reveals that where Labour exposures UKIPs health and social policy
people listen. The Stoke result is an exact mirror of 2015 . However
this is UKIPs Waterloo and this cannot be avoided or denied. He
question now is how the left reinvigorates and develops radical
change. We have taken several steps back from the edge of the cliff.
The wolves will begin to fight and the loathsome Nuttal will be
consumed.....It's a good morning and Brexit 3 denied.....
