European thoughts....... in late July 2017

Yesterday I watched Michael Heseltine give a lecture on the Parliamentary Channei give a lecture on the life of Ted Heath. while never liki g or approving of the Heath government what is interesting me is the recollections of Heseltine on Heaths service as a supporter of the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War as a soldier. Heath saw the effects of war in Europe, he visited the concentration camps and he saw the horror of strident nationalism and fascism in Europe. unlike the ignorant of UKIP and the narrowness of the massive majority of the leavers there are very few who know their history or understand the rise of fascism. So few who really can see that as Europe fragments and the right rise again how similar are the times we live in both then and now. How sad it is only the experience of it or a detailed historical awreness of it can show us the truth. THE ONLY THING I HAVE AGREED WITH Ted Heath was his support of Europe.WE STILL LIVE IN A EUROPECTORN BY NATIONALUSM AND UNDERMINNED EVERYWHERE BY VERY UNPLEASANT RIGHT WING PARTIES. Its an unpleasant vision...Developments in Poland over an independent judiciary and issues in Hungary do much and more to suggest a leit motiv of the 1930s........70 years of peace and that's a major achievement...from 1945 to 2017...over two generations of peace....in Europe
