Confront the Kippers On the 13th January UKIP are teaming up with a far-right group that publishes extreme anti-Islam rhetoric. They plan to hold a “pro-Brexit rally” on the steps of the National Assembly. We will be holding a counter-rally to show that their values are not Cardiff’s values, and that Cardiff is a vibrant, open, inclusive European city.

On the 13th January UKIP are teaming up with a far-right group that publishes extreme anti-Islam rhetoric. They plan to hold a “pro-Brexit rally” on the steps of the National Assembly. We will be holding a counter-rally to show that their values are not Cardiff’s values, and that Cardiff is a vibrant, open, inclusive European city.

About the “pro-Brexit rally”:

The rally is being hosted by a far-right group called the People’s Charter Foundation. Their website prominently features a campaign to sack Sadiq Khan, who they accuse of being “relaxed about Islamic Terror”.

The leader of People’s Charter is called Luke Nash-Jones, and he will be speaking at the Cardiff rally. He has uploaded a video of himself at a far-right protest where Tommy Robinson was speaking. In the video Nash-Jones calls the Prophet Muhammed a “paedophile”.

Also speaking at the Cardiff rally will be two UKIP Assembly Members – Neil Hamilton and Gareth Bennett. In March 2017 Neil Hamilton had to apologise in the Sennedd for suggesting that “suicide is an option” for those adversely affected by the economic impacts of Brexit. In December 2017 Gareth Bennett was barred from speaking in the Sennedd after making offensive remarks about transgender people.

These values are not Cardiff’s values, which has a rich history of multiculturalism and openness to the world. On 13th January we will be there to show that UKIP and People’s Charter do not speak for us.

Please protest in a good-natured way, exemplifying the spirit of openness, inclusion and internationalism. In order to give the rally an internationalist look, you may wish to bring the flag of a country that has particular meaning to you - the idea being that a variety of flags will show how Cardiff is part of and host to a wider community of nations.
