The late Christopher Hitchin's once commented that free intelligence lay in the struggle between ironic speech and literal speech... Well our bags are packed aand its time to go . This will be the last blog piece till September 10th. In North Wales Jac o`the Alt Right raves and tweets about me ad nauseum. I am sure a certain Anne Greagsby too. I have heard it all before. My blog piece seems to have stirred, encouraged or reminded Yes Cymru of its commitment to diversity. Perhaps also there would have been many awkward questions asked at Plaid Pride had they not or at other numerous Pride events across Wales.
I have heard Anne's bigoted transphobic hate piece defended on the grounds of free speech. Defended on the grounds that she was quote `a proud catholic”. One of her defenders argued he wouldn't want his daughter using a unisex toilet because of the threat. When I pointed out to him that all our toilets at home are uni sex and that all disabled toilets are then he was strangely silent. I also pointed out that attack on young women was in nearly 100% of cases carried out by heterosexual mails and not by transsexuals.
Those like Jac have this naïve assumption that your genitalia is the pure determiner of whether you are male or not. They dont understand the differences between sex, the cultural construction of gender nor of sexuality. They forget that we were all female before the foetus fully forms.
They forget that binary sex is largely a produced of Judeo Christian and Eurocentric societies and even there there are notable exceptions. In North American Native society we had the Berdache, in Hindu tradition we had the transexual priest. Often regarded in the Vedic texts as the most holy and bi Celtic myth we had the bearded woman. In Greece the ancient God/ess Dionysus was both male and female. They dont their history do these bigots, they dont know their history, their culture or let alone themselves.
I was delighted that Glyn Morris writer of the Welsh Blog "National Left”had much the same to say.
`The worst part of this is the comments from some of Jac's supporters .
I am not LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender), BAME Black, Asian, and minority ethnic (used to refer to members of non-white communities in the UK) or a Welsh Speaker and yet support all these causes .
Leanne Wood has Crossed the Bridge when it comes to learning Cymraeg ,since she became leader, but can any one claim that she had not overwhelmingly support equality for Cymraeg before she took up the reins.
Supporting minority causes will not win Independence or see an increase in votes for Plaid, but it is the right thing to do.
Indeed is that not what all of us should be doing whether we are in Seattle, Bristol or Blaenau Ffestiniog? `
I always think of August bank holiday weekends as the last barrier between the rest of the year and the silly season. We find ourselves looking forward to 'normal' life the resumption of politics, the courses, the school year begins again. Philosophy courses resume and the leaves now falling increase to become a torrent. The resumption flows on to to the September equinox. And as light and dark near balance, the darkness and light in all of us becomes more apparent. It becomes apparent in institutions and in governments in world leaders and in the progress and consequences of events.
In the therapy world the pressures of school holidays on relationships begins to end. The hint of Autumn and the ghosts of Winter begin to stir. In Ystradgynlais Tesco the Christmas sweets begin to appear. The next seven days is the liminal zone between the unreality of suspended time and the full action of hidden and unconscious forces made manifest. The speed of change racks up the gears, the buses fill up again and the roads begin to become more congested. Normal times are resuming or perhaps I should say reinvigorating.
But for us we are putting it off for another ten days. See you on the other side....
.“Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them. We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant.”(Karl Popper)
Anyway that's enough from me.
